Tanzania Visa & Entry Requirements
Most visitors to Tanzania require a visa for entry. The process is straightforward, and we recommend applying online through the Tanzania e-visa system before your trip to avoid delays at the airport.
E-Visa Application
The Tanzania e-visa is the most convenient way to obtain your visa. Apply online at the official Tanzania Immigration Services website at least 2-4 weeks before your planned arrival date. The process typically takes 5-10 business days.
To apply, you will need:
- A valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your planned departure date
- At least two blank pages in your passport for entry stamps
- A digital passport-sized photograph (white background)
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or safari confirmation)
- Return or onward flight ticket
- Yellow Fever vaccination certificate (if arriving from an endemic country)
- Credit or debit card for the visa fee payment
Visa Types and Fees
- Single Entry Tourist Visa: $50 USD for most nationalities. Valid for up to 90 days.
- Multiple Entry Visa: $100 USD. Valid for 12 months with multiple entries allowed.
- US Citizens: $100 USD for a single entry visa (reciprocity fee).
- Visa on Arrival: Available for most nationalities at major entry points, but we recommend the e-visa to avoid potential queues.
Visa-Exempt Countries
Citizens of some countries, including several East African nations, do not require a visa for Tanzania. Check with the Tanzanian embassy or consulate in your country for the most current information.
Zanzibar Entry
If you are traveling from mainland Tanzania to Zanzibar, no additional visa is required as Zanzibar is part of the United Republic of Tanzania. However, you may be asked to show your passport upon arrival in Zanzibar.
