About the Park

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park, though compact at just 330 square kilometers, packs an extraordinary diversity of habitats and wildlife into its boundaries. Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park encompasses a stunning range of ecosystems, from dense groundwater forest to open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and the alkaline lake itself.

The park gained international fame through Ernest Hemingway, who described it as "the loveliest lake in Africa." It is perhaps best known for its unusual tree-climbing lions, which can sometimes be spotted lounging in the branches of acacia and mahogany trees. The lake attracts vast flocks of flamingos and over 400 species of birds, making it a paradise for bird watchers.

The groundwater forest at the park entrance is a unique ecosystem fed by underground springs from the Rift Valley escarpment. This lush canopy is home to troops of baboons, blue monkeys, and an impressive variety of forest birds. The park also supports healthy populations of elephants, giraffes, hippos, and a variety of antelope species. Lake Manyara serves as an excellent introduction to Tanzanian safari or a perfect complement to the northern circuit.
