Mara River Crossing Safari
Created this safari Idea.
Exciting river crossing at the Mara River is perhaps the highlight of the Serengeti Wildebeest Migration, a striking life-and-death display as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest brave the traitorous currents and prowling crocodiles in a last-ditch attempt to reach the safety of the Maasai Mara in Kenya.
Our 06-day wildebeest crossing safari takes you into the northern Serengeti and offers the best chance of seeing death-defying leaps and heart-wrenching near misses as you spend multiple nights and days in the world-famous Serengeti National Park.
Tarangire National Park is a hidden gem in Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. With herds of elephants, lions, and other game flocking to its river banks and swamps during the dry season, it offers an excellent East African Safari! After incredible game drives in Tarangire National Park, then drive to a small town close to Ngorongoro Crater, Kataru for dinner and overnight.
After early breakfast, as we’ve got a big day of discovering and adventure ahead of us!
We’ll begin the day with the beautiful drive towards the Serengeti. Along the way, we’ll pass through the mist-shrouded rainforests of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where you might be lucky enough to glimpse cape buffalo, baboons, or even elephants and leopards in the dense undergrowth.
It’s a nearly four-hour drive to the Serengeti park gates, but you can choose to break up the drive with one or both of the below optional activities: Stop at Maasai village for a cultural experience, as well as possible to stop at Olduvai Goerge, sometimes known as the Cradle of Mankind, the Oldupai Gorge Museum commemorates some of the oldest evidence of human habitation ever found. Here you can see some of the oldest fossil evidence in the world of human habitation, visit the Oldupai Gorge Museum to learn more about the human journey, and take in the stunning views of this stark gorge country.
After breakfast, we will drive across the plains of Togoro and through the Mbuzi Mawe kopjes (small hills) as we make our way into the park’s northern reaches.
Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to see the Serengeti’s diverse scenery as you pass through wooded hills, tumbledown kopjes, and the wide open savannah. Your drive will show you everything from the diminutive dik-dik to towering elephants and giraffes.
Spending two nights at Kogatende region, you’ll go out in search of both the Wildebeest Migration and the famous Big Five.
Along Mara river is where the game drive bases, home to large numbers of hippos and Nile crocodiles, the Mara River is the last major obstacle standing between the Wildebeest Migration and the relative safety of the Masai Mara. If you’re patient and a little lucky, you may even get to witness the death-defying crossing itself where wildebeest and zebras brave the river’s currents and crocodiles in an attempt to reach safety on the opposite bank.
Breakfast at the lodge. Today, head back towards Karatu, enjoying a safari through the plains of the Serengeti along the way and exploring the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Spot wildlife as you travel south and take in the epic landscapes of this abundant region of Tanzania. Stop for a picnic lunch before continuing your trip to Karatu. Arrive in Karatu in the afternoon and perhaps enjoy an optional visit to a local Maasai village or to the interesting Olduvai Museum. Dinner and overnight stay in Karatu.
Breakfast at the lodge. Today, discover the beautiful Ngorongoro Crater a fascinating 20 km wide crater and safari destination, known for its rich wildlife that is protected within its 600 metre high walls. It’s the best place in Tanzania to spot the ‘Big Five’ mammals and more than 400 bird species can be spotted within this monumental crater. Stop for a picnic lunch upon the shore of beautiful Lake Magadi and watch the colorful flamingos and hippos, who bathe in the lake water. After fully exploring the breath of natural attractions within the crater, in the afternoon drive off the Crater and take a transfer to Airport.
